1. What are the main differences between Chinese Medicine and western Medicine?

TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine) regards the body as an organic whole with network of meridians connecting and co-ordinating the internal organs. TCM believes in the innate ability of the body to heal itself.

TCM aims to regulate the meridians or channels of the body to improve the whole body condition, then self-healing and prevention. So the Chinese TCM treats the causes rather than reacting to and suppressing symptoms as they arise. Patients are often puzzled why the questions doctor asked are not related to their conditions, and amazed to find that not only are their main complaints improving, but many secondary complaints are also responding.

2. How Chinese doctor makes a diagnosis?

A consultation with a TCM practitioner generally follows a well-established routine. The four stages of the consultation enable the practitioner to build up a detailed diagnosis, identifying the underlying syndrome, and make a treatment plan.

  • Observing: Observing includes the observation of the tongue, hands, face, nails, skin, the patient's body type, and the way the patient moves.
  • Listening: Listening includes listening to the patient's existing condition the response to questions, the tone of voice, and the speed of talking.
  • Questioning: Questioning the previous medical history,
  • Pulse-taking: This mainly involves taking the pulse at the patients both wrists, but may also include body palpation if necessary.

5. Can the treatment be used in conjunction with Western Medicine?

Western medicine and traditional Chinese Medicine can be combined and they often enhance each other's effects. Acupuncture, massage and cupping are compatible with virtually all modern medical techniques. Chinese herbs can greatly enhance the benefits of conventional Western medications. At times, it may be possible to eliminate the need for some of these medications. In occasion, Chinese medicine interfere with western medicine, the doctor will take account when they prescribe you herbs.
